Shadows, outlines and layer effects

Style text, shapes and image layers with effects that remain adjustable.

Applies to Photo 0.9.0 on photo.et.

How it works#

Layer styles add visual treatments without requiring you to paint those effects into the layer. A drop shadow can separate a caption from a photograph; a stroke can keep a badge legible against a busy background. Open Layer → Layer Style for the selected layer and choose an effect appropriate to the design.

Available effects include Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel & Emboss, Satin and Stroke. Color, Gradient and Pattern Overlay cover layer content with a chosen treatment. More than one effect can contribute to the final appearance, so evaluate the combination rather than judging each setting in isolation.

Keep effects restrained when readability matters. A large shadow and thick outline can overwhelm small text, while a subtle stroke may solve the same contrast problem. Copy and paste layer styles when related elements should share a consistent appearance. Existing PSD effects can be imported, but a complex file still deserves a visual comparison with its source. Save a layered copy to retain the ability to change or hide effects later.

Try it#

  1. Select the text, shape or image layer to style.
  2. Open Layer → Layer Style and choose an effect.
  3. Adjust the effect while comparing it against the full composition.
  4. Copy the style to related layers and retain a layered master.
