Layers, groups and blend modes

Build a composition from independently editable image, text, shape and adjustment layers.

Applies to Photo 0.9.0 on photo.et.

How it works#

A layer separates one part of a composition from the others. Keep a background photograph, a headline, a badge and color corrections on separate layers so each can be changed without rebuilding the entire image. The Layers panel controls ordering, visibility and the active editing target. A tool can appear to do nothing when the wrong layer is selected or the intended layer is locked.

Groups organize related layers. Clipping masks constrain one layer using the content beneath it, while blend modes change how a layer combines with the underlying image. Opacity controls the overall contribution of a layer; fill and layer effects can produce a different result, so compare them when styling text or shapes.

Use multi-layer selection with alignment and distribution to arrange several elements. Linking layers helps keep related pieces together during movement. Merge and flatten simplify a document but remove editing flexibility. Save a layered master first, especially when a composition contains live type, adjustment layers or masks that you may need to revise later.

Try it#

  1. Open the Layers panel and identify the layer you want to change.
  2. Duplicate important image content before making destructive edits.
  3. Group related elements and give layers descriptive names.
  4. Compare blend modes and opacity, then save the layered document.
